Downsize your home &
upscale your life...
Welcome to Downsizing Up. A website devoted to helping people live and thrive in less space.
Our Changing Vision of the Perfect Home…
We all have a vision for our “perfect home”. For most of us, that vision has been increasing in terms of size and amenities for nearly 70 years. It started with wanting an extra bathroom or a separate bedroom for each child. Then it increased to needing a separate home office for the adults, a bonus room for the kids, more closet space all around, as well as a dedicated bedroom for guests and so on.
Well, most of us can see where this is going. Pretty soon you are talking about some serious square footage. And, that’s exactly what happened. Over a 65 year period, the size of the average new home has increased close to 300% – from 980sf in 1950 to nearly 2700sf in 2015!
Has bigger and better morphed into a burden?
But with that increased size has come increased expenses and time commitments. It’s not just the increased mortgage payment. It’s the taxes, the heating, the cooling, the unexpected extras. There is also the time it takes to landscape, mulch, plant, clean, scrub, wax, and polish and otherwise maintain a larger space.
It’s no wonder that more and more people are taking a serious look at downsizing. The overhead of a large home can begin to feel like a big ball and chain in terms of expense and time.
Downsizing your home is the new way to upscale your life…
It sounds great and it can be wonderful. But that doesn’t mean it’s exactly simple either. When you get used to a lot of physical space, paring down can be difficult. There will be trade-offs and choices to make, and you will be asking any number of questions:
- Will we be able to live without a bonus room?
- Can we get by without a dedicated room for a home office?
- Are we going to be able to cope with one less bathroom?
- What are we going to do without a separate guest room when family comes to visit?
- How do we decide what to keep and what to toss?
- Can we cram all the things that we love into half the space?
- Should we opt for condo, townhouse or single family home?
- How do we maximize the use of our smaller living space?
This website is devoted to showing you how to make the most use of your new space and how to determine what kind of downsizing situation is best for you.
